Once the subject matter and opportunity was presented, the verbal ping pong would begin. Frequent episodes of spontaneous verbal extreme sport exercise would ensue during a fun game of singles. Not a competition, but a massive effort to make the rally last as long as possible. A draw always aimed for as a joint outcome. Targets were usually unsuspecting, but listened in as part of the onlooking crowd (sometimes the stadium was empty), in awe and wonder at the verbal display confronting them. Awe and wonder inspired by a total lack of comprehension of what we were actually talking about. A pitch invasion, verbal interruption, missiles (usually in the form of a cup of tea) would eventually bring the proceedings to an abrupt conclusion. A knowing look would pass between us, a broad grin, and time to cool back down and get back to the serious business of domestic chatter. Those spontaneous games will remain treasured in my memory.
